BIRMINGHAM. Ala. – The University of Toledo baseball team opened its weekend series at Samford on Friday, falling to the Bulldogs 9-4.
After starting the game with a run in the top of the first, the Rockets allowed five runs in the bottom half of the inning and couldn't overcome the early deficit.
"Once again, we gave up some runs in the first inning to get off to a bad start," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "It's an issue we have to fix. It is hard to always be hitting and playing from behind. We also didn't execute enough pitches when we needed to on the mound. Offensively we are coming along, but had plenty of chances to score more runs. We have to be better at striking when we get the chance."
Coming off his MAC Player of the Week honor,
Chris Meyers went 3-for-5 at the plate with his fourth home run of the season.
John Servello also had three hits for the Rockets, while
Darryn Davis reached base in all four of his at-bats with two singles and two walks.
Nicky Winterstein stayed perfect as a pinch hitter this year (4-for-4) with his RBI single off the bench in the top of the eighth inning.
Kyle Jones started on the mound and tossed four innings for Toledo.
Sam Servello,
Cal McAninch, and
Bryce Davis all saw time out of the bullpen.
These two teams will meet again on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET
How it Happened
- Toledo took advantage of a Samford throwing error to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Trace Hatfield's routine ground ball to the third baseman turned into a run-scoring play after the throw sailed by the first baseman, allowing Mason Sykes to score easily from second.
- Samford didn't wait long to take the lead, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first, two of which game on a home run to left-center off the bat of Tyler McManus.
- The Bulldogs extended their lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, making the score 7-1, then added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-1.
- Meyers launched his fourth home run of the year in the top of the seventh, a two-run shot to right field that brought the score to 8-3.
- Samford's Ryan Crockett drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-3, his third at-bat of the night that resulted in an RBI.
- Winterstein came off the bench and laced a base hit into right field to bring home John Servello in the top of the eighth to trim the deficit to five, 9-4.
