KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Sophomore
Quinesha Lockett scored 30 points to help lead Toledo (11-12, 7-12 MAC) to an 82-73 win over Western Michigan (6-14, 5-13 MAC) in Kalamazoo Wednesday afternoon.
The Rockets held a double-digit lead for much of the game, thanks in part to Lockett's performance. The Omaha, Neb. native reached the 30-point benchmark for the third time this season. She connected on 13 of her 17 shot attempts from the floor and hauled in nine rebounds as well.
Sophomore
Sophia Wiard added 14 points, freshman
Sammi Mikonowicz added 13 points, and sophomore
Mali Morgan-Elliott contributed seven points and 10 rebounds. This was the third time this season Morgan-Elliott tallied at least 10 rebounds.
Toledo led by 13 at the end of the first quarter off the strength of its shooting, making 75 percent of its shots in the first frame. The Rocket lead stayed above 10 for nearly the entire game, until a late WMU run cut the lead to five. Toledo was able to knock down late shots and Wiard was 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final minute to help her team secure the win.
The Rockets tied a season-high by shooting 49.2 percent from the floor (31-63) and made a season-high 46.4 percent of their three-point field goals in the win. Toledo won the rebounding battle by a slim margin, 32-29.
Western Michigan was led offensively by Reilly Jacobson, who was 12-of-17 from the floor with 28 points and eight rebounds. Maddie Watters added 14 points. The Broncos shot 53.7 percent from the field, making 29-of-54 shots
First Quarter
- Toledo doubled up WMU in the first quarter, taking an 18-9 lead after draining eight of its first 10 shots at the 3:48 mark.
- Lockett's steal and layup with 10 seconds remaining put UT ahead by 15, 28-13, its largest lead of the game. It wouldn't last long though, as WMU's Abby Voss made a shot at the buzzer trim lead back to 13.
- The Rockets shot 75 percent from the field in the first quarter, making 12 of their 16 attempts, fueling a 28-15 lead heading into the second.
Second Quarter
- Toledo's sizzling shooting cooled off a bit to start the second quarter, as the Midnight Blue and Gold missed their first four shots. Despite that, they still held a double-digit lead when Lockett drained a three-point for the first points of the second frame.
- Western Michigan pulled within nine, 42-33, with a 6-0 run in the final minutes of the first half, but Mikonowicz successfully knocked down both free throws at the end of the quarter to give her team a 44-33 lead heading into the locker room.
- Lockett scored eight points and pulled down three rebounds in the second stanza, matching her point total from the previous quarter
Third Quarter
- Toledo still led by 11, 54-43, near the halfway mark of the third quarter after the two teams traded baskets.
- Morgan-Elliott was all over the glass to start the second half. She grabbed six rebounds in the first five minutes of play.
- Freshman Khera Goss put the Rockets up by 13 at the 2:10 mark, 61-48, the final bucket for either team in the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- Lockett carried the load to start the fourth quarter, scoring Toledo's first nine points to help keep the Rockets ahead of the Broncos by double digits. Toledo led WMU, 70-60, halfway through the quarter.
- The Broncos used four straight made field goals and a 9-0 run to pull within four, 70-66, with less than four minutes to play in the game.
- Wiard knocked down a trey with 2:58 to go that put Toledo ahead by seven, and Lockett made a three-pointer 45 seconds later to put the Rockets up by eight, 78-70.
- With less than a minute to play, Wiard made all four of her free throw attempts to ice the game and send Toledo home with a win.
