Rockets Hold on to Defeat Eastern Michigan, 59-55

TOLEDO, Ohio – Sophomore Quinesha Lockett scored 22 points to lead the University of Toledo women's basketball team to a 59-55 victory over Eastern Michigan in the Rockets' season finale in Savage Arena on Saturday.

The Rockets (12-12, 8-12 MAC) took the lead late in the first half and led by as many as 10 in the third quarter, but EMU (10-9, 7-7 MAC) wrestled the lead away in the final minutes to take a one-point advantage heading into the fourth. The final quarter was hotly contested, as neither team led by more than four points. Eastern Michigan had the ball with 18 seconds to go and trailing, 58-55, but committed a costly turnover. Sophomore Sophia Wiard then knocked down one of her two free throw attempts in the closing seconds to seal the win for the Rockets, who avenged their loss at Eastern Michigan earlier this season.

Lockett's 22 points was her 13th 20-point game of the season. She ends the year averaging 19.6 points per game, which ties her for seventh all-time in program history in single-season scoring average. The Omaha, Neb. native is now tied with Angela Drake, who averaged 19.6 points per game in the 1995-96 season. Lockett's 19.6 points per game is the highest scoring average by a Rocket since 1998-99 when Kim Knuth averaged 25.4 points per game.

Wiard added 13 points and six assists, while freshman Sammi Mikonowicz was close behind with 10 points. Freshman Khera Goss contributed a season-high five steals on Saturday.

Eastern Michigan was led offensively by Ce'Nara Skanes and her 17 points, while Areanna Combs (13) and Autumn Hudson (11) both reached double figures in scoring as well. Skanes led all players with 11 rebounds.

First Quarter
  • Eastern Michigan took an 8-2 lead to start the game and would end up leading for the entire first quarter.
  • Toledo never fell behind by more than six, and was able to pull within three, 18-15, by the end of the quarter. Lockett's and-one in the closing seconds of the first quarter cut the deficit to three.
Second Quarter
  • Wiard opened the score in the second quarter, blowing by her defender for a layup to bring Toledo within one, 18-17.
  • The Rockets fought their way to a tie score three times in the second quarter, then finally broke through with in the final two minutes to take their first lead of the day.
  • Wiard drained a three with 1:17 to go in the first half to give Toledo a 27-26 lead. Lockett took a handoff from Mikonowicz and drilled an open trey with 20 seconds left to put the Rockets ahead, 30-26, heading into halftime.
Third Quarter
  • Toledo opened the second half with seven straight points to take an 11-point lead, 37-26, the largest lead for either team today. Sophomore Soleil Barnes provided the big shot with a deep three-pointer that brought the Rockets' bench to their feet.
  • The pendulum swung the other way in the second half of the third quarter, as EMU used a 14-5 run to take a one-point lead, 45-44, when the clock hit zeroes.
  • The Eagles held Toledo scoreless for the final 2:11 of the quarter, and Skanes knocked down a shot at the buzzer to put her team on top heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
  • Eastern Michigan led by three at the 7:57 mark, 48-45, but Lockett came through in the clutch with a three-pointer to tie the game at 48-48.
  • Sophomore Mali Morgan-Elliott drove to the basket for two and put Toledo on top, 50-48, with 5:57 to go. The Rockets would lead or hold a share of the lead for the remainder of the game.
  • After Skanes tied the score at 52-52 with 3:56 to go in the game, Wiard found an open Mikonowicz for two, giving UT a 54-52 advantage.
  • Eastern Michigan had the ball with 18 seconds to go and a chance to tie the game, but committed a costly turnover to squash its opportunity to overtake Toledo. Wiard knocked down one of her two free throw attempts in the closing seconds to make it a two-score game, which was enough to seal the deal for the Rockets.
