OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Toledo baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader at Miami, winning the second game 4-3 after dropping a close game one, 2-1.
"Today was a wild ride of emotions," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "Game one was a heartbreaker losing it at the very end like that.
Kyle Jones threw another great game for us. Game two we battled and battled and found a way to win. The offense did enough to get the job done, but
Layne Schnitz-Paxton gave us all he had and went the distance."
Jones had thrown five scoreless innings and held a 1-0 lead in the first game when, in the bottom of the sixth, Miami took advantage of a Toledo error to score two and take a late lead. The Rockets regrouped and came back to win the second game thanks in part to Schnitz-Paxton's seven-inning complete game and eight strikeouts.
"I told the team after the game that a lesser group of guys would have folded after what happened in game one," Reinstetle said. "But they banded together and got a big win in game two. Tomorrow is a great opportunity to come back again and walk out of here with a series tie."
Nicky Winterstein and
Matt Kirk both had two hits and an RBI in the victory in game two, with Winterstein driving in the game-winning run in the sixth. The Toledo offense collected just two hits in game one; Winterstein and
Chris Meyers each had one in the first game on Saturday.
The Rockets will attempt to tie the weekend series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
