OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Toledo baseball team opened Mid-American Conference play on Friday at Miami, falling to the RedHawks by a score of 9-6.
"The outcome was not what we wanted, but the energy and effort were good today," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "We had our opportunities on both sides of the ball. We had chances to put their hitters away and couldn't execute some pitches. I give Miami credit for taking advantage of our mistakes."
Cal McAninch made the first start of his career on Friday, striking out two in 1.1 innings of work.
Jordan Power provided 6.2 innings out of the bullpen, striking out seven and not walking anyone.
"The offense did a solid job today and kept us in the game," Reinstetle said. "But we have to put the throttle down when we have them on the ropes. We'll be back tomorrow ready to battle again and get some wins."
Ryan Thompson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk, and
Chris Meyers also drove in two runs against Miami.
Trace Hatfield was 3-for-5 at the plate, while
Matt Kirk and
Nicky Winterstein both had two hits.
Toledo and Miami will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be seven innings.
