Toledo Drops Series Opener at Wofford, 13-3

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Toledo baseball team opened up its weekend series at Wofford with a 13-3 loss to the Terriers.

"I'm really disappointed in the effort on the mound," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "It's so hard to always be playing from behind. It puts a lot of pressure on the offense to produce in a big way. We have to be better in the early part of the game to give ourselves a chance. It all starts on the mound."

The Rockets allowed three runs in the bottom of the first and three in the second and found themselves unable to escape the early deficit. Five pitchers saw time on the mound for Toledo, including three newcomers.

"We did have a few new faces make their first collegiate outings," Reinstetle said. "Jason Young, Kyle Pijaszek, and Jack Olberding all threw the ball well late in the game. That was really good to see and we need them to build off that. I'm searching for guys who want to compete and get hitters out."

At the plate, John Servello went 3-for-5  and Chris Meyers went 2-for-5 with an RBI double. Mason Sykes drove in the other two runs for Toledo.

These two teams will meet again for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m. that will feature two, seven-inning games. Game two will be available on ESPN+.

How it Happened
  • Toledo's opponent scored in the bottom of the first to take an early lead for the ninth time this season. The Terriers plated three runs in their initial trip to the plate to go up 3-0
  • The Rockets trailed 6-0 after two innings thanks to three more Wofford runs in the bottom of the second.
  • Nicky Winterstein came around to score in the top of the third for the first Toledo run of the game, making it 6-1.
  • Wofford continued to pile it on by scoring in the third, fourth, and fifth to open up a 13-1 lead.
  • Making his Rocket debut, Pijaszek tossed a scoreless bottom of the seventh.
  • Olberding also threw a scoreless frame, working his way out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth to strand a pair of runners.
  • Toledo scored two in the top of the ninth, but it was too little too late. Meyers ripped a double into right-center field to drive in a run, then Servello scored on Sykes' sacrifice fly to make it 13-3, which would stand as the final score.
