Toledo Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Toledo baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader at Wofford on Saturday. The Rockets dropped a close contest in game one, 2-1, before falling 11-6 in game two.

Both games of Saturday's doubleheader were seven-inning contests.

Kyle Jones threw all six innings in game one, striking out two and allowing just the two runs. Nicky Winterstein was 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot and John Servello drove in the lone Toledo run with an RBI double.

In game two, Wofford took an early lead and used a six-run fourth inning to pull ahead of the Rockets for good. John Servello launched his second home run of the season in the second game, while Chris Meyers, Darryn Davis, Ryan Thompson, and Thomas Eitniear all drove in runs as well. Davis reached base three times in the second game, tallying two hits and a walk. Nicky Winterstein walked twice and scored twice as the Rockets' leadoff man.

Four pitchers saw time in game two. Jordan Power started and threw three innings, and Bryce Davis wrapped up the game with 1.2 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.

The Rockets and Terriers will face off again on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.

Game One
  • Servello drove in Winterstein with a double to left field in the top of the second, giving the Rockets a 1-0 lead.
  • Jones retired the first seven batters he faced before finding himself in a little trouble in the bottom of the third. He was able to escape a bases-loaded jam, though, to carry the Toledo lead into the fourth.
  • Wofford struck with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 2-1. A sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1, then a two-out base hit into left-center drove in what would end up being the winning run.
  • Toledo had runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, but was unable to bring them in to score.

Game Two
  • The Terriers scored three in the bottom of the first to take an early lead over the Rockets. Both Wofford runs were scored with two outs.
  • Servello smacked a home run to left field in the top of the third inning to put Toledo within one, 3-2.
  • Wofford's big inning came in the bottom of the fourth, where they scored six runs to open up a 9-2 advantage. After two straight walks to lead off the inning, a Terrier triple brought those two runners around to score to start Wofford's six-run fourth.
  • Meyers drove in Winterstein with an RBI double in the top of the fifth to make it 9-3.
  • The Terriers answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase their lead over the Rockets to eight, 11-3.
  • Toledo was able to push runs across in the sixth and seventh, but couldn't overcome the large deficit. Thompson's sac fly and Eitniear's two-out RBI single in the top of the sixth made it 11-5, and Davis hustled out an RBI triple in the top of the seventh to bring around Servello and bring the score to 11-6.
