Last Time Out
Toledo opened its 2021 season at USC Upstate last weekend, dropping all three games to the Spartans.
The closest game of the weekend was Sunday's finale. The Rockets opened the day with a three-run homer from
Chris Meyers in the top of the first, but the Spartans answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and added to their lead with two more runs in the second. Toledo chipped away at its deficit in the sixth and seventh, and
Trace Hatfield's double in the top of the ninth put the tying run in scoring position. The Rockets were unable to bring him home though, with Upstate's Kevin Davis striking out the next two batters to end the game.
Rocket Notes
- Toledo's non-conference opponents posted a combined record of 64-18 in 2020.
- Nicky Winterstein came off the bench in the sixth inning of Saturday's game and slugged a pinch-hit home run, the first by a Rocket since Jason Edwards in 2009.
- Seven players made their Rocket debuts last weekend. Mason Sykes (LF), Marcus Strother (C), and Justin Diaz (SS) each started all three games at their respective positions, while Scott Mackiewicz appeared as a pinch-hitter in Sunday's game. Nate Boyle, Cal McAninch, and Sam Servello all appeared out of the bullpen.
- Trace Hatfield opened his season with two multi-hit games last weekend. He went 2-for-3 on Opening Day and went 2-for-5 with a double in Sunday's game.
- Darryn Davis was named to D1Baseball's Preseason Top 30 Second Basemen list prior to the start of the season.
Scouting the Competition
Davidson owns a record of 1-2 entering the weekend, having defeated Morehead State in its first game of the year before dropping both ends of a doubleheader at NC State on Sunday. The Wildcats were picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll and posted a record of 13-3 in the abbreviated 2020 season, including a win at No. 10 Duke. As a team, Davidson is hitting .219 through its first three games and averaging 7.0 runs/game. The pitching staff has a combined ERA of 8.28 and allowed at least six runs in all three games.
