Rockets Set to Battle Red Flash, Warriors

TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Toledo men's tennis team is set for afternoon matches against Saint Francis on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and Wayne State on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Both matches will be held at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee. 
 
Admission to both matches is free. Free Domino's pizza will be available at Sunday's match.  Fans are welcome throughout the season to join the men's tennis team's fight against cancer in memory of Luis Kleinschnitz's mother and can donate to the cause here. Following Sunday's match, the day's top two donors to the cause will have the opportunity to play a mixed doubles tiebreaker with the No. 1 doubles team, Danilo Vukotic and Filip Zupancic.
 
Last Time Out
The Rockets extended their home win streak to four as they defeated Northwestern Ohio and Youngstown State over the weekend. On Friday, Toledo defeated UNOH, 6-1, with doubles wins from senior Danilo Vukotic/junior Filip Zupancic and freshman Krzysztof Wetoszka/sophomore Cole Shoults. Vukotic, Wetoszka, Shoults, freshman Luis Kleinschnitz, and Zupancic racked up singles victories to seal the Rockets' win. On Saturday, Toledo clashed with Youngstown State. The Rockets earned the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts. Leading the Penguins 1-0 going into singles action, Klienschnitz and Wetoszka posted the Rockets' next two points from the No. 5 and No. 2 courts, respectively. Shoults clinched the match after a three-set battle on the No. 3 court, putting Toledo up 4-1 over YSU. Zupancic earned the Rockets' final point on the No. 6 court, sealing Toledo's 5-2 victory. 
 
Last Time Against Saint Francis
Toledo met Saint Francis at the 2016 Rocket Invitational. Serjen Olmedo defeated Jan Vit Suntra in two sets, while Vince Anzalone and Reid Teatsorth downed their opponents in three sets. On the doubles court, Omar Espinosa and Stephen Miller defeated Alec Dylan Foo-Kune/Franz Luna 6-4, 6-2. The Red Flash also appeared in Toledo's 2017 Rocket Invitational, but did not clash against the Midnight Blue and Gold. 
 
Scouting Saint Francis
Saint Francis is 1-7 (0-0 NEC). SFU has suffered road losses from Morgan State, Lehigh, Youngstown State, Cleveland State, Buknell, Mercyhurst, and Penn State. The Red Flash is coming off their only win, a 4-0 sweep of Juniata. 
 
SFU did not compete last season. This is the first spring season the Red Flash will be competing since the program was reinstated in 2019 after a one-year hiatus. 
 
Last Time Against Wayne State
Toledo defeated Wayne State 6-1 last season in the Glass City. The Rockets earned the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts from Omar Espinosa/Luka Vitosevic and Juan Carranza/Shoults. Vitosevic, Vukotic, Thawin Suksathaporn, Espinosa, and Tyler Gargas posted wins on the No. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 courts during singles action. 
 
Scouting Wayne State 
The Warriors sit undefeated at 4-0 (0-0 GLIAC). WSU posted 6-1 wins over Walsh and Findlay as well as a 7-0 sweep of Tiffin. On Feb. 14, the Warriors edged out Lewis on the road in Illinois. Wayne State will face Saint Francis at 6:00 p.m. at Shadow Valley Tennis Club, prior to its match Sunday against the Rockets. 
 
Freshman Luke Laws, senior Pierre Renaudie, and sophomore David Solar boast 4-0 records in singles action. In doubles play, Laws and junior Niklas Karcz are 3-0 on the No. 1 court. On the No. 2 court, Solar and freshman Dom Spicer are also 3-0. 
 
Last season, the Warriors were 21-4 (8-0 GLIAC) and posted sweeps of Lawrence Tech, Findlay, Walsh, Indiana Tech, Lees-McRae College, Davenport, Ashland, Michigan Tech, and Lake Superior State. In the GLIAC Tournament, the No. 1 seed Warriors swept No. 4 seed Northwood in the semifinals, 4-0, before defeating No. 3 seed Ferris State, 4-2, in the championship. No. 2 seed WSU defeated No. 7 seed GVSU, 4-1, in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regionals before falling to No. 3 seed Drury, 4-2.
