JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Toledo baseball team completed its opening weekend with a 9-7 loss at East Tennessee State on Sunday.
The Rockets led 7-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but the Buccaneers scored five runs to cap a stunning comeback. ETSU's Kyle Richardson hit a three-run, walk-off home run to end the game.
"My heart goes out to this team," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "They came ready to play today and did everything the coaching staff asked of them. We swung the bats like we are capable of and the pitchers did a great job of throwing strikes. In the end, the last three outs of a game are always the hardest to get. I told the team that if they give this effort and focus for every game from here on out, we'll win a lot of games. Today we took a step forward in that direction, regardless of the outcome. Failure is not the opposite of success; it is a part of it."
Sophomore
Darryn Davis was terrific at the plate, recording a career-high five RBIs including a two-run triple in the top of the ninth. Junior
Chris Meyers was 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk and two runs scored. Junior
Danny O'Reilly had two base hits and classmate
Lorenzo DeBrecht drove in a run for the Rockets.
Junior
Jordan Power started for Toledo, throwing four innings and striking out four with no walks. Senior
Nate Haugh was excellent, pitching four shutout innings out of the bullpen.
Next up for Toledo is the Alamo Irish Classic in San Antonio (Feb. 20-22). The Rockets will play the hosts, Notre Dame, as well as UTSA and Incarnate Word.
How it Happened
- The Rockets took their first lead of the season in the top of the first. Meyers doubled into the gap in right-center field, stole third base, and then scored on a ground ball to second base to put Toledo ahead, 1-0.
- ETSU answered right back in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead. Two RBI doubles down the left field line and a two-run home run did the damage for the Bucs.
- Toledo pulled within one with a two-run third inning. junior John Servello, Meyers, and O'Reilly all reached to load the bases, then Davis and DeBrecht drove in runs to make the score 4-3.
- Meyers' RBI single in the top of the fourth knotted the score at 4-4.
- After allowing four runs in the first inning, Power threw three scoreless frames and allowed just one baserunner.
- With runners on first and second, Davis laced a single into right field that brought in the go-ahead run, his third RBI of the day. The run gave Toledo a 5-4 advantage.
- Haugh maneuvered his way out of trouble in the fifth and sixth innings. ETSU put runners on first and second in both frames, but was unable to convert any baserunners into runs.
- Davis capped his excellent afternoon with a two-run triple to right field, putting Toledo on top 7-4 with three outs to go.
- The Bucs scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth. A two-run, bases loaded single put the ledger at 7-6, then Richardson's three-run, walk-off homer ended the game.
