Toledo Softball Sweeps Oakland in Tuesday Twinbill

Rochester, Mich. - The Toledo softball team (15-20, 4-4 MAC) swept Oakland (10-22, 3-8 Horizon) in a nonconference doubleheader today, outhiting the competition 22-8 to claim 10-2 and 2-0 victories. The wins helped UT establish a four-game winning streak and were largely the result of a strong offensive outing from sophomore Morgan Paaverud, who knocked in a three-run homer while going 6-for-7 with five RBIs and two runs.

The Rockets also extended their streak of scoring first to six games today thanks to senior Kaitlyn Bergman who was responsible for the first run of both games today. Her efforts extended her personal on-base streak to 17-straight games, the most in at least a decade for any UT player. (reached-base streak records prior to 2008 are not readily available).

How it happened
Game 1:
  •  Toledo opened game one with a bang as Bergman hit a three-run homer while batting in the cleanup position. The dinger was her fifth of the year and was followed by an RBI single from sophomore Bekah Yenrick that gave UT a healthy 4-0 lead in the opening frame.
  • The Rockets added three more in the third as junior Morgan Paaverud singled to score one, sophomore Kylie Norwood doubled to score one, and senior Katie Cozy singled to bring around another, making things 7-0 Rockets.
  • Oakland broke the shutout in the bottom of the third as Lauren Pletscher hit a double that scored one. Shannon Carr then hit a RBI single up the gut to close UT's lead to 7-2.
  • The Rockets final runs of the game came in the sixth from Paaverud who left the park with two on. The effort proved too much for the Golden Grizzlies who managed to get one on base thanks to a HBP, but Toledo took the next three batters down in order to activate the mercy rule, give sophomore Maggie McGurk her fifth W of the year, and wrap up game one.

Game 2
  • The second outing of the day was a calmer affair as both teams combined for just eight hits through seven innings.
  • Toledo got on the board first as Bergman hit a sac fly into right field that scored Norwood.
  • After taking Oakland's batters down in order in the third, the Rockets added their lone insurance in the fourth when sophomore Ami Ill hit a RBI single into right field that scored junior Samantha Golden.
  • The Golden Grizzlies would go on to work just two runners on base for the rest of the game and watch seven of their batters strike out as the Rockets cruised to their second victory of the day. Sophomore Erin Hunt was the pitcher of record, recording her ninth of the season.
