Huskies Ground Rockets in Series Opener

DeKalb, Ill. - The Toledo softball team (15-21, 4-5 MAC) went down to the wire with Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois (19-20, 6-6 MAC)  on Friday in a 6-5 defeat at Mary M. Bell Field in DeKalb, Ill.The Rockets outhit the competition 11-9, but some fifth-inning heroics from the Huskies spoiled game one of the weekend series.

Senior Kaitlyn Bergman extended her reached-base streak to 18 games after going 2-for-4 with a season-best four RBIs.

How it happened
  • For the seventh straight game Toledo scored first, bringing in two runs in the first inning thanks to Bergman and sophomore Bekah Yenrick. Bergman hit into a fielder's choice with two on but senior Megan Choate was able to beat the tag at home plate to put her side up 1-0. Yenrick's single then allowed senior Katie Cozy to come home.
  • NIU responded in the bottom of the frame as Abby Howlett hit an RBI single to center that scored one. The Huskies left two on the bags though as UT worked a final groundout on the next batter.
  • Bergman added her second RBI of the day in the second frame as a center field single brought around sophomore Kylie Norwood and put UT up 3-1.
  • The Huskies were able to tie things at three a piece in the third thanks to a two-run homer from Howlett, her second homer of the year.
  • After the Rockets left one stranded in the top of the fifth, a big bottom of the fifth push by the Huskies brought in the eventual game-winning run. A single and two walks loaded the bases in NIU's favor. A hard-hit double to left center from Katie Lamich then brought around all three runners to put the Cardinal and Black up 6-3.
  • The sixth inning saw Bergman pop a double up the left field line to score Cozy and Norwood. With two outs already on the board, Yenrick then singled to put runners on the corners, but the Rockets would leave both runners stranded.
  • NIU managed to work one onto the bases in the sixth, but she was left standing there to bring up Toledo's final turn at the plate. A single, sac bunt and grounder put junior Morgan Paaverud on third for the Rockets, but a groundout by Norwood kept Paaverud where she was and ended the game.
