Wilmington, N.C.— Toledo took an early, five-run lead over UNC Wilmington and held on to defeat the Seahawks, 5-3, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday evening.

UT scored all of its runs in innings four, five, and six to take a 5-0 lead. UNCW plated three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to pull within two, but the Rockets stood strong to improve to 5-5 on the season.

Senior Axel Bueter was terrific, tossing four shutout innings and striking out two, and fellow senior Luke Schaefer threw 2.1 scoreless frames. At the plate, senior Brad Boss and junior Michael Ryan each had two hits and sophomore Zach Schwartzenberger drove in a pair of runs.

UT and UNCW will meet again on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.

How it Happened

Toledo scored the game's first run in the top of the third when Meyers' RBI single scored Boss and gave the Rockets a 1-0 lead.
Two more runs came across the plate for the Midnight Blue and Gold in the top of the fourth. Schwartzenberger and Boss both tallied RBI base hits to put UT ahead, 3-0. The Rockets found a little bit of luck in the inning, as ground ball from Ryan hit second base and bounced safely into the outfield.
Bueter tossed four shutout innings, including a five-pitch frame in the bottom of the fourth.
UT padded its lead in the top of the fifth, scoring on a bases-loaded walk and senior Riley Campbell's RBI single to right field, making the score 5-0.
UNCW pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth, scoring all three with no outs to cut into the Rockets' lead and pull within two, 5-3.
The Seahawks had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but senior Nate Haugh slammed the door and earned his third save of the season.
