Kent State Spoils Opening Day for Toledo Softball

Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo softball team (8-16) dropped its home and conference opener to Kent State (8-15) today with a 6-1 defeat. The Rockets were out hit 10-4 and left 11 runners stranded in the first game of the Mid-American Conference season.

How it happened:
  • The Golden Flashes opened the game with a double-triple combo that brought in the first run 11 pitches into the first inning. A sac fly from the next batter scored the second run and gave Kent State an early lead.
  • Toledo tried to answer in the bottom of the frame off a single from senior Kaitlyn Bergman and walk from sophomore Ami Ill that put two on, but the chance was negated as three batters went down from a fly out,  ground out and strikeout.
  • Another glimpse of hope appeared for UT in the bottom of the second inning when the Midnight Blue and Gold loaded the bases off a single, walk and shortstop error. Senior Megan Choate stepped up for her second appearance of the day and was ahead on the count 2-1 when a shallow foul ball found its way into the first baseman's glove to end the inning.
  • Things quieted down until the fifth when the Golden Flashes added a pair of runs to the board off a two-run homer from Carlee Selle, making things 4-0.
  • KSU put two more runs on the board in the top of the seventh thanks to an exceptional display of bat work from the entire lineup. Kennadie Goth opened the inning with a bunt that allowed her to reach first and was moved to second on a sac bunt from Brenna Brownfield. Five pitches later, Selle walked, and both runners moved into scoring position off a sac bunt from Sydney Anderson. Brownfield then came up again and smacked a double into center field to bring in the runners.
  • The Rockets put up their lone run in the bottom of the seventh when three straight walks loaded the bases and allowed senior Katie Cozy to break up the shutout with a single to right field. Unfortunately the next three batters went down in order to end the game.
