Rockets Fall at Lipscomb, 12-6

Nashville, Tenn.— The University of Toledo baseball team could not overcome a six-run first inning by Lipscomb in its 12-6 loss to the Bisons on Thursday. The Rockets drop to 2-2 on the season.

Toledo surrendered nine runs in the first three innings and was unable to counteract Lipscomb's offensive outburst. Sophomore Trace Hatfield led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring twice. Senior Brad Boss notched two hits and junior Michael Ryan drove in a pair of runs at the plate. Sophomore Kyle Bischoff, senior Luke Schaefer, and freshmen Kyle Jones and Jamie Myers saw time on the mound.

Toledo continues its tour through Nashville with a game against Middle Tennessee on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

How it Happened

  • Lipscomb plated six runs in the bottom of the first to take a commanding early lead. A sac fly and a passed ball brought in the first two runs, then a pair of two-run base hits brought the Bisons tally to six runs.
  • Toledo got two of those runs back in the top of the second. Michael Ryan and Riley Campbell brought runners home with hits to left field and made the score 6-2.
  • The Bisons tacked on another run in the bottom of the second, then Trace Hatfield's RBI double in the top of the third brought the score up to 7-3.
  • Lipscomb bumped its lead back up to six after a two-run third inning, courtesy of a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
  • The Rockets chipped away at the deficit during the top of the fifth, scoring three runs to make it 9-6. Ryan's RBI groundout brought in the first run of the inning, then Schwartzenberger singled up the middle to bring in run number two. He would later score on a passed ball to complete the scoring in the fifth inning.
  • Schaefer ended his afternoon retiring seven straight batters, keeping the Bisons at bay long enough for his hitters to strike in the fifth.
  • Lipscomb built its lead back to six runs after scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh, making the game 12-6, which would hold as the final score.
