Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's soccer team (3-2-1) is set for a weekend of action against Illinois State (2-4-2) and Oakland (0-7). The Rockets host the Redbirds on Friday at 3:00 p.m. then ship up to Rochester, Mich. on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. contest against the Golden Grizzlies.
Toledo's match against Illinois State will feature a nod to those battling cancer. As part of the Kick for a Cure promotion, cancer patients will receive free admission to the game. Special "Stand Up to Cancer" signs will be given out, and those in attendance who are battling cancer will be recognized at halftime.
Last time out
The Rockets are coming off a double-overtime thriller that saw the Midnight Blue and Gold lose 2-1 to Detroit Mercy on Sept. 6. Senior captain
Hannah Scafaria scored UT's lone goal, registering her sixth point of the year. With the goal, Scafaria is two scores away from matching her career high.
Scouting Toledo
The Rockets are led by senior captain
Hannah Scafaria who has netted six goals through six games, including a hat trick against UIC on Aug. 26. Scafaria had a breakout year in 2017, scoring eight goals and two assists and shows no signs of slowing this season. The UT attack is rounded out by sophomores
Sophia Lewis and
Alex Troy, who have each recorded almost 300 minutes this season. Lewis has netted one goal and assisted on another, and is a consistent threat along the wing. Troy regularly plays in the middle and contributed goals in Toledo's 2-0 wins over Valparaiso and IUPUI.
Sophomore
Madison Perrin has been Toledo's main goalkeeper this season. Perrin holds a 2-2-1 record with one shutout, a .769 save percentage and a 1.15 GAA.
Last time against Illinois State
Toledo last saw the Redbirds in September 2012 when ISU won 1-0 at Scott Park. Illinois State's point came from Sarah Mussallem in the 57th minute. UT put seven shots at the net following the goal but was unable to respond before the final whistle. The Redbirds put five of their seven shots on goal that day, and goalkeeper Aryn Newsom made four saves. The Rockets put four of their 18 shots on goal and Sam Tiongson also made four saves.
Scouting Illinois State
The Redbirds are coming off road losses against Wisconsin (1-0, Sept. 6) and Illinois (1-0, Sept. 9). ISU is led by Angel Krell, who has three goals and one assist through eight matches. Seven other Redbirds have registered goals this season, and Illinois State as a whole has recorded 10 goals and 10 assists, with 56 of their 108 shots being placed on frame.
In net, Haley Smith has been the team's go-to goalkeeper. Smith holds a 2-4-2 record through eight matches and possesses a 1.51 GAA and .782 save percentage with one shutout. She's backed up by Jenny Scara, who has played 45 minutes this season, allowing three goals and making one save.
Last time against Oakland
UT last saw the Golden Grizzlies in September 2016 when the Rockets won 1-0 in Rochester, Mich. Jordyn Greer scored for Toledo in the 35th minute after beating Oakland's Alison Holland one-on-one. Toledo ended the day with 11 shots (seven SOG) to Oakland's 10 (two SOG).
Katie Wilson stood in net for UT, recording two saves through 90 minutes.
Scouting Oakland
The Golden Grizzlies have had a rough start to their season, dropping seven straight matches while only netting one goal and allowing 18. Oakland's lone goal on the year came from Sophie Wilsey in the first match of the season. The Golden Grizzlies' main goalkeeper has been Jaimie Leas who holds a 2.24 GAA and .682 GAA through all seven matches.
