Toledo, Ohio— Toledo took down Ohio, 8-1, on Sunday at Scott Park to clinch its second Mid-American Conference series of the season.
After evening the series on Saturday, the Rockets came out firing today. UT led 2-0 after three innings and, after allowing an Ohio run in the fourth, scored six more over the fifth and sixth frames to come away with the win and the series.
Toledo's offense tallied 13 hits against the Bobcats, with junior
Ross Adolph leading the way with three. The centerfielder also had the biggest swing of the afternoon- a grand slam to right field in the sixth inning. Freshman
John Servello stayed hot, extending his hitting streak to 17 games. He tied a career high with three runs scored as well. Senior
Brad Boss had a solo home run and scored twice, while freshman
Trace Hatfield recorded two hits and two RBIs. Senior
Dalton Bollinger and sophomore
Michael Ryan both had two hits on the day.
Freshman
Jacob Youngpeter started his third game and notched the first victory of his UT career. He threw three shutout innings to kick things off, and senior
Alex Wagner, freshman
Kyle Bischoff, and sophomore
Layne Schnitz-Paxton all pitched very well for the Rockets out of the bullpen.
Entering the weekend, Ohio led the MAC in runs scored (154), but Toledo held OU to just three runs over the last two days in its two victories.
Next up for Toledo will be a Tuesday home game against Dayton at 3:05 p.m., followed by the Rockets' trip to Comerica Park to play Madonna University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
Tickets to UT's game at Comerica are still available through the
Toledo Athletic Ticket Office.
How it Happened
- Hatfield's ground out in the first inning allowed Servello to score easily, the latter of which lined a single to center field to keep his hitting streak alive.
- Boss launched his home run in the third inning to make the score 2-0. The senior also made a spectacular diving catch in left field on Sunday.
- Ohio tabbed its only run of the day on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Wagner followed that up by getting OU to ground into an inning-ending double play. He also forced the Bobcats into an inning-ending double play in the sixth inning; Hatfield snagged a line drive and threw out the runner at second.
- The Rockets plated two in the bottom of the fifth. Hatfield hustled out an infield single to bring in Servello and Bollinger's seeing-eye single found the grass in left field to score Adolph.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Adolph launched his eighth home run and the Rockets' second grand slam of the year to make it 8-1.
- Schnitz-Paxton was dominant in the ninth inning, coming in and getting a weak ground out to second and two three-pitch strikeouts to seal the deal for Toledo.
