Rockets Earn Comeback Victory over Flyers, 7-6

Toledo, Ohio— Toledo scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap a wild 7-6 comeback victory over Dayton on Tuesday.

The Flyers scored four in the top of the first to stun the Rockets, but they would muster just two more scores on four hits the rest of the game. Toledo never backed down, scoring once in the third, twice in the fifth, once in the seventh, and three in the eighth to take the lead. Freshman John Servello drove in the game-winning run on a single up the middle, scoring senior Brad Boss.

Servello tied a career best with three hits on Tuesday, extending his hitting streak to 18 games and his on-base streak to 22 contests. Fellow freshman Chris Meyers slugged his first home run in the second inning to put Toledo on the board, and senior AJ Montoya started the eighth-inning rally with a solo homer to left field. Junior Ross Adolph was 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs and two stolen bases.

Four different UT pitchers threw at least two innings: junior Billy Todorowski, junior Luke Schaefer, senior Axel Bueter, and sophomore Austin Calopietro, who earned the win for Toledo. He threw 2.1 scoreless frames and struck out five in a dominant performance.

Next up for the Rockets is their trip to Comerica Park to face Madonna University. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night.

How it Happened
  • Dayton dominated the game early on. The Flyers scored four in the top of the first on an RBI single, passed ball, and two-run double. UD frustrated Toledo in the field for much of the game with its aggressive base running, stealing six bases on the day.
  • The home run by Meyers came in the bottom of the second with two outs and gave Toledo its first run of the day.
  • Dayton scored once each in the third and fifth innings. Brandon Smith homered in the third and Brian Wood drove in a run on a sacrifice fly two frames later. Smith was very good at the plate on Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • The Rockets scored two runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Servello singled through the left side to drive in his first run of the game and Adolph hustled out a bases-loaded infield single to make it 6-3.
  • In the seventh, Adolph once again came through with the bases loaded, driving in a run on a sac fly to right field.
  • For the second time in three games, Montoya smacked a clutch home run in the eighth inning. This time, he drove a 2-0 pitch over the fence in left field to start the Rockets' eighth inning rally.
  • Meyers scored easily on a wild pitch and, a few batters later, Servello laced a single up the middle into center field that scored Boss and gave Toledo its first lead of the game.
  • Calopietro blew through the final three hitters of the game to secure the 7-6 win. The sophomore got the first batter to pop out the catcher and struck out the final two hitters he faced.
