Toledo Falls to Ohio, 15-4, in Home Opener

Toledo, Ohio— Toledo had its home opener spoiled by Ohio on Friday when the Bobcats handed the Rockets a 15-4 loss at Scott Park.

OU scored a run in the top of the first, and UT tied it up in the bottom of the third. Ohio broke the game open the next inning, though, plating six runs in the fourth. Toledo scored one run each in innings three through six, but the Bobcats' offense kept churning out runs in the final four frames to win game one of this weekend's series.

Offensively, freshman John Servello extended his hitting streak to 15 games, the first streak that long by a Rocket since the 2011 season (Ben Hammer, 18 games). Servello was 2-for-5 on the afternoon. Seniors Brad Boss and Dalton Bollinger also tallied two hits on Friday. Servello, senior Casey Gose, and sophomore Michael Ryan tallied the RBIs for Toledo.

Junior Michael Jacob started on the mound and pitched four innings for the Rockets. Six other pitchers made appearances for the Midnight Blue & Gold, including freshman Alec Bukowski, who made his collegiate debut.

Toledo and Ohio will be back in action on Saturday at 1:05 at Scott Park. The game will be broadcast locally on BCSN.

How it Happened
  • Ohio knocked in a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly deep to center field.
  • The Rockets tied it up in the third inning. Freshman Chris Meyers legged out a triple to lead off the inning and Gose drove him in on a ground out to shortstop.
  • The biggest inning of the day came in the top of the fourth. The Bobcats scored six runs to take a 7-1 lead, much of the offense coming from a grand slam from centerfielder Devon Garcia.
  • Toledo got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Senior AJ Montoya's sky high fly ball to left field dropped safely, allowing him to reach third base and for freshman Trace Hatfield to score easily.
  • Servello drove in a run in the fifth to make it 7-3. Gose started the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on an error. The senior would score on Servello's liner to right field.
  • Ohio kept pouring it on in the sixth, scoring four runs combined on an RBI single and a three-run blast to right field off the bat of Aaron Levy.
  • Ryan's RBI in the bottom of the sixth came on a fielder's choice that allowed Bollinger to score.
  • The Bobcats scattered four runs over the final three innings to bring the final score to 15-4.
