Toledo Falls to Western Michigan in 14-Inning Marathon

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Toledo softball team fell to Western Michigan, 2-1, in a 14-inning marathon on Friday afternoon at Ebert Field. The deciding run was scored on a base-loaded single after more than two hours of scoreless play. The Rockets drop to 28-15 overall and 12-3 in conference play.

Junior Heather Webb put together a dozen-straight scoreless innings from the second to the 13th to keep the Rockets alive. Webb took the tough-luck loss in one of her best performances to bring her record to 12-8 on the year.

The Rockets and the Broncos played the duration of two full games, and it took all 14 innings to decide a winner. Webb struck out a career-high nine batters, while allowing two runs on five hits. Webb walked four and faced 51 batters in a grand total of 191 pitches.

Senior Sam Showalter and freshman Bailey Curry led the offense with two hits apiece. Junior Katie Cozy scored the lone run for UT on an RBI single by Showalter.

How it Happened
  • Western Michigan jumped to a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Rockets came right back to knot the game at 1-1. Cozy singled the lead off the second inning and moved up on junior Megan Choate's sacrifice bunt. A base hit up the middle by Showalter evened the score.
  • It was all pitching and defense from there on. Webb and WMU's Jordan Kurth each threw a complete game and combined to record 12-straight scoreless innings.
  • The Rockets big chances came in the ninth and 10th innings. A lead off double by Curry in the ninth had the Rockets in motion, but two foul outs and a strike out ended the threat. In the 10th, pinch runner Taylor Weekly tried to score from first on a double by Showalter, but was cut down at the plate to keep the game tied.
  • The Broncos had runners in scoring position in the sixth and the ninth innings, but were turned away by Webb and the Rockets' defense.
  • A walk, a single and a fielder's choice loaded the bases in the 14th for the home team. With one out and the outfielder's drawn in, Sydney Stefanick delivered the game-winner to right field.
The Rockets and the Broncos meet for at least 14 more innings as part of a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1:00 p.m.
