Athens, Ga.— Toledo and Georgia opened up a three-game series on Friday night with a game won by the Bulldogs, 7-0.
The Rockets surrendered one run each in the third, fourth, and fifth innings before UGA broke the game open with a four-run eighth. UT had chances offensively, most notably in the final two innings, but was unable to push a run across the plate.
Senior
Matt Hansen, senior
Dalton Bollinger, and freshman
John Servello had the hits for UT. Bollinger started at first base and hit fifth in his first game since Feb. 17. Junior
Michael Jacob started on the mound and threw 4.2 innings for the Rockets, while junior
Luke Schaefer, freshman
Kyle Bischoff, and senior
Nolan Silberhorn also pitched on Friday night.
Two big streaks were kept alive on Friday. Hansen tallied the Rockets' first hit of the night, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Boss drew a walk in the top of the seventh inning to extend his on-base streak to 12 games, having reached base at least once in every game this season.
Georgia's starter, Chase Adkins, did a very good job keeping UT's bats in check. He pitched six shutout innings, holding the Rockets to two baserunners while striking out nine.
Toledo and Georgia will play a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, beginning at Noon. The two teams switched up the schedule this morning due to inclement weather expected in the area on Sunday.
How it Happened
- Georgia scored once in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to inch ahead of Toledo. The Bulldogs' first run came on a steal of home. UGA's Cam Shepherd broke for home and slid in safely, putting the first run on the board for either team.
- In the fourth inning, UT surrendered an RBI single up the middle. The run gave Georgia a 2-0 lead.Â
- The Rockets almost left the fifth inning unscathed, but UGA scored on a fielder's choice that was nearly an inning-ending double play. Georgia led 3-0 after five frames.
- Toledo got its first baserunner and first hit in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Michael Ryan drew a one-out walk, and a couple batters later Hansen drove a single up the middle to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
- The best offensive chance for UT came in the top of the eighth. Freshman Chris Meyers walked and Servello laced a pinch-hit single up the middle to put two men on base. Hansen drew a walk to load the bases with two outs, however the inning ended without any runs for the Rockets.
- Georgia added insurance runs in the eighth inning. One run scored on a blooper to left field and two more came in on a line drive to right field, followed by an RBI double down the left field line.
- Toledo didn't go down without a fight. Bollinger's fly ball down the right field line in the ninth inning dropped fair, allowing Boss to move to third and give UT two men on base with one out. Unfortunately, the runners would not advance any further and the game ended with a final score of 7-0.
