Toledo Completes Sweep Over Akron With 6-1 Win

AKRON, Ohio - Freshman Bailey Curry hit her team-leading eighth home run and junior Kailey Minarchick tossed five shutout innings as the Rockets defeated Akron, 6-1, to complete a three-game sweep at Lee R. Jackson Field.

With the win, the Rockets move to 17-12 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference, while Akron falls to 1-23-1 on the year and 0-3 to start the MAC season.

"I thought our offense really exploded this weekend," said Toledo head coach Kristen Butler. "It's huge to get off to a good start in conference. We have a goal in MAC play that we want to reach and having these three wins will help towards reaching that goal."

Toledo 6, Akron 1
The Rockets scored two runs in the first, second and fifth innings and the combination of Minarchick, junior Heather Webb and sophomore Leah Allison were lights out in the circle for UT.

Curry led the offensive attack with a 3-for-4 day and a pair of RBIs, while freshman Taylor Weekly contributed two singles, an RBI and scored a run. Senior Ashley Rausch drove in two runs with a fifth-inning double in the win.

How it Happened
  • Freshman Ami Ill walked with one out in the first inning before Bailey Curry deposited her eighth home run of the season over the left field fence to give UT a 2-0 start. Curry's eight HRs are tied for the third most in a single season at Toledo.
  • The Rockets doubled their lead with two more in the second. Freshman Ebony Garza doubled and scored on an RBI single by Weekly. Weekly then advanced to third on a groundout and scored easily on a two-out RBI double by freshman Kylie Norwood.
  • A one-out double in the third and back-to-back singles in the fourth by Akron gave the Zips their best chance to score against Minarchick. Minarchick escaped both jams to blank UA through four.
  • Toledo added its final two tallies on two hits and an error in the fifth. Curry singled and was replaced by freshman pinch runner Raelyn Nyren. Junior Katie Cozy reached on an error that moved Nyren to third and both runners would score later in the inning via a two-run double by Rausch.
  • The Zips scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run to left field.
  • Allison set down three of the four batters she faced in the seventh to seal the win.
The Rockets' home opener will take place on Tuesday, March 27 in a doubleheader against Oakland. UT will then travel to Kent State for its next MAC series on March 30-31.
