TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo softball team opened its home schedule in style and ran its winning streak to five games with a pair of wins over Oakland on Wednesday at Scott Park. The Rockets defeated the Golden Grizzlies by scores of 1-0 and 2-1 to enact revenge for a loss earlier in the season.
Junior pitchers
Heather Webb and Kailey Minarchick combined for 14 strikeouts in 14.0 innings, allowing just one run on six hits. Webb spun a two-hit shutout with a career-high eight strikeouts, while Minarchick fanned six in her complete game performance.
Offensively, only
Ashley Rausch had multiple hits on the day. The senior centerfielder went 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored to lead the charge.
Toledo 1, Oakland 0
Toledo scored its lone run in the bottom of the first inning and junior
Heather Webb made it stand up to earn the win in the Rockets' 2018 home opener.
How it Happened
- Freshman Ami Ill reached on an infield single in the first and stole second to get into scoring position. Ill moved to third on a groundout and scored on a clutch RBI single by junior Katie Cozy down the right-field line.
- Webb retired the first six Oakland batters she faced, including a pair of strikeouts, but ran into trouble in the third. A pair of walks and an infield single loaded the bases. Webb's third punchout of the contest got her out of trouble to hold onto a 1-0 lead.
- Oakland tallied its second and last hit in with two outs in the fourth, but another strikeout from Webb ended the inning.
- The Rockets' offense sputtered, but the one run was all Webb needed. The Madisonville, Ky. native set down the last 10 Golden Grizzlies she met to close out the game.
Toledo 2, Oakland 1
FreshmanÂ
Bekah Yenrick came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give UT its fifth-straight win. Junior Kailey Minarchick went the distance and did not allow a walk to pick up her ninth win of the season.
How it Happened
- Toledo scored again in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 edge. Freshman Kylie Norwood laced a single through the right side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Norwood then moved to third on a groundout and scored easily on an RBI single by freshman Bailey Curry.
- Minarchick retired nine straight batters to start the game and was perfect through three innings.
- A leadoff single in the fourth inning by Oakland broke up the no-hit bid and started a rally. A sacrifice bunt and an RBI single was enough to manufacture a run and tie the game at 1-1.
- The Rockets had chances in the fifth to regain the lead but fell short. Freshman Ebony Garza started the frame with a single and was sacrificed to second where she was stranded.
- The Golden Grizzlies put a runner on first with no outs in the sixth. A popped up bunt attempt and a heady play by junior Kaitlyn Bergman to double off the runner at first calmed the threat.
- Senior Ashley Rausch nearly ended the game with a long fly ball to left field, but settled for a double to begin the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Yenrick was called on to pinch hit and came through with the Rockets' third walk-off win of the year.
The Rockets put their unbeaten Mid-American Conference record on line this weekend (March 30-31) at defending tournament champion Kent State.
