Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's tennis team (10-3) will play its first two matches of the Mid-American Conference season this weekend when the team hits the road to take on Buffalo (7-3) and Akron (11-7). The Rockets travel to Buffalo, N.Y. on Friday to take on the Bulls at 1:00 p.m., then return to Ohio on Sunday to play the Zips at 1:00 p.m. in Akron.
"Coming off the impressive UIC win (on Saturday), the team is playing with a lot of confidence," head coach Tracy Mauntler said ahead of the trip. "At this point, they've done all the hard things—the work and preparation since August all comes down to the next five- to six-weeks. It's time to go out and execute."
Looking to the weekend, Mauntler noted that the keys to winning this weekend are confidence and consistent determination.
"Buffalo is the defending MAC champs and preseason favorite. They're an experienced team," Mauntler said. "Our players need to continue believing in each other and playing with confidence. These MAC weekends will be grueling, especially when we are on the road. One of the biggest challenges will be turning around after playing Buffalo on Friday to play Akron on Sunday."
SCOUTING BUFFALO
The Bulls are coming off a weekend of wins. Buffalo topped the College of Charleston 4-2 on Saturday followed by a 7-0 win over South Carolina St. on Monday. With Monday's sweep, the Bulls are on a four-match winning streak. UB also hasn't lost a home contest this season.
SCOUTING AKRON
The Zips are coming off a mixed result double header on March 15. Akron started the day with a 4-3 loss to Youngstown State before going on to sweep La Salle in a 7-0 victory. Akron was on a five-match winning streak prior to the loss and are 5-4 when playing at home.
SCOUTING TOLEDO
Toledo is coming off a 6-1 victory against the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) on Saturday March, 17. UT swept the doubles point against the Flames thanks to the No. 2 pairing of senior Colleen O'Brien/junior Dee Dee Leenabanchong and the No. 3 pairing of senior Megan Miller/junior Thalita Rodrigues. The match was the third straight victory for the Rockets and featured Rodrigues winning a match tiebreak 4-6, 7-6, 10-8 in the No. 5 singles spot, along with O'Brien and Leenabanchong winning their 11th straight doubles match.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Senior Colleen O'Brien (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and sophomore Dee Dee Leenabanchong (Bangkok, Thailand) were awarded the Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week honor for March 19-25. Leenabanchong and O'Brien extended their perfect doubles record to 11-0 this season after helping Toledo top UIC in a 6-1 win on Saturday, March 17. Toledo clinched the doubles point thanks in part to O'Brien and Leenabanchong's 6-0 sweep in the No. 2 spot. The pair have only been forced into a tiebreaker set twice through 11 doubles matches, and remain undefeated. With the win, the Rockets are now 10-3 on the year and have established a three-match winning streak.
