Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's tennis team is set to host the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) on Saturday, March 17 at Two's Athletic Club in Toledo. First serve is set for noon.
Â
The Rockets (9-3) are coming off a three match road trip in California that saw the team go 2-1, falling to CSU-Fullerton, but rallying over UC-Riverside and UC-Irvine to close out the week. The trip was highlighted by sophomore Dee Dee Leenabanchong and senior Colleen O'Brien earning their 10th-straight No. 3 doubles victory. The duo is now 10-0 on the year and head coach Tracy Mauntler is proud of how far they've come.
Â
"Colleen and Dee Dee have really grown into a doubles force," Mauntler said. "They've never played together before January, but you would never know that. They have so much confidence in each other and that shines through."
Â
Maulter also commented on the trip out west as a whole, saying that traveling to California provided the team with "invaluable experience that we can't put a price tag on."
Â
"The tough competition enabled us to really push ourselves and put us in pressure situations," Mauntler said. "Living in the same house for a week really strengthened their relationships as members of our team."
Â
Turning to UIC (4-3), UT hasn't beat the Flames since the 2014-15 season when the Rockets won 4-3 in the season opener in Chicago. Mauntler noted that the Horizon League favorites "always play us tough" and doesn't expect this match to be any different.
Â
The Flames are Toledo's final opponent before Mid-American Conference play begins. UIC's stat line is very similar to UT's first MAC opponent, Buffalo, and the match could set the tone for the rest of the season.
