Bats Come Alive in Toledo’s 16-8 Win over Saint Louis

Kissimmee, Fla.— Toledo ended its season-opening trip to Florida on a high note, soundly defeating Saint Louis, 16-8, on Sunday afternoon.

The Rockets tallied 17 hits against the Billikens in a contest highlighted by a nine-run eighth inning. UT batted around twice and drew nine walks in the big win.

Senior AJ Montoya was 4-for-5 with a game-high five RBIs. Freshman Trace Hatfield and junior Ross Adolph provided the big hits for Toledo. Hatfield smoked a bases-clearing double to left-center field in the eighth inning and Adolph smacked a three-run home run to right field in the fifth. Every UT position player who started had at least one hit and one run.

How it Happened
  • Senior Sam Shutes started the game and promptly gave up leadoff triple. The veteran righty was unfazed though, and would go on to retire the next nine batters he faced.
  • The Rockets got on the board in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Montoya. He drove in Adolph, who walked and stole second base to set up the run.
  • Toledo ran into a bit of trouble in the fourth inning. Saint Louis scored four runs on five hits to go up 4-1. Parker Sniatyski's two-run home run was the big hit for SLU.
  • UT retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth on Adolph's dinger. His hit was preceded by an RBI single from Riley Campbell and both helped the Rockets bat around for the first time in the game.
  • Freshman Bryce Davis made collegiate debut in sixth inning, coming in to relieve Shutes. After giving up a leadoff double, Davis would retire his next three batters to get out of the inning unharmed. The rookie pitched three innings, allowing one run.
  • Montoya extended Toledo's lead in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run blooper that dropped in behind the shortstop. Senior Matt Hansen and Campbell came around to score on the play.
  • The story of the game was the bottom of the eighth inning. Toledo scored nine runs to bust the game wide open, and started the inning with seven consecutive hitters reaching base. Hatfield's bases-clearing double plated the first three runs and he also drew a bases-loaded walk in the inning for four RBIs.
Toledo ends the weekend with a record of 2-2, both victories coming over Saint Louis. Adolph reached base a team-best 11 times, recording six hits and five walks this weekend. He tied Montoya with a team-high five RBIs as well.

Next up for UT is a three-game series next weekend at Austin Peay.
