DEKALB, Ill. - Junior
Hannah Scafaria scored her second goal of the match on a 108th-minute header to give the Rockets a 2-1 double overtime win over Mid-American Conference West opponent Northern Illinois on Friday night at the NIU Soccer Complex.
A season ago, the Rockets defeated the Huskies, 1-0, on an overtime header by then junior
Isa Echeverri in Toledo.
Scafaria has netted five goals in the Rockets last four matches and currently sits third in the MAC with six scores on the season. Junior
Alena Sidwell had a great game herself, recording assists on both UT scoring plays.
Toledo (5-4-2, 2-0-1 MAC) blanked Northern Illinois in the first half as redshirt freshman
Madison Perrin made a pair of saves in the opening half. However, the Rockets could not capitalize and ended the half tied at 0-0.
Northern Illinois (5-4-1, 2-1-0 MAC) broke the scoreless stalemate with a mark in the 63rd minute. Lauren Gierman bent a a corner kick around the post for the opening salvo.
The Rockets battled back to knot the game just over six minutes later on Scafaria's first goal of the contest. Senior
Sophie Pohl, along with Sidwell, were credited with assists as Scafaria came away with the ball after a scramble in the box.
The offenses slowed down considerably for the remained of regulation and the teams went to overtime locked at 1-1.
After a scoreless 10:00 in the first overtime, the Rockets came out aggressive in the second overtime with senior
Isa Echeverri firing the first attempt three minutes into the period.
The lone Huskie attempt in the period sailed wide giving possession back to UT. Minutes later, Sidwell played a great cross in front of the net which was headed in by Scafaria, sending the Toledo bench into hysteria.
The women's soccer team will make its way to Kalamazoo, Mich. for a Sunday contest against Western Michigan at 1:00 p.m.
