TOLEDO, Ohio - A pair of goals from seniors
Hannah Scafaria and
Sophie Pohl and a shutout defensively was enough to give Toledo its first win of the season, 2-0, over Canisius in the home opener at Scott Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Rockets (1-0-1) took the lead in the 25th minute when Scafaria came up from her defensive position to knock in a bouncing ball for her first goal of the season.
Canisius (1-1-0) put just one shot one goal in the opening half, which was easily stopped by freshman
Madison Perrin. Perrin recorded her second career shutout in as many matches.
The second half was all UT as the Rockets out-shot the Golden Griffins 8-0. Toledo extended its lead to 2-0 just two minutes into the second half. Senior
Regan Price sprinted down the right side and centered a pass to
Sophie Pohl, who chipped it into the back of the net.
UT's defense was stout in the second half as well and did not allow a shot attempt by Canisius.
Toledo took eight corner kicks compared to just two for the Griffs. The Rockets fired 12 shots in total and faced only one shot defensively. Price and fellow senior
Isa Echeverri both took a pair of shots on the afternoon.
The Rockets put their unbeaten record to the test on the road when they take on Michigan, Sunday, Aug. 27 at 8:00 p.m.
