MUNCIE, Ind. - The Toledo baseball team dropped its series finale, 7-6, in walk-off fashion to Ball State on Sunday afternoon at the Ball Diamond.Â
The Rockets (14-33, 7-11 MAC) were led by sophomore
Ross Adolph who went 3-for-4 with a double and scored a pair of runs. Freshman
Michael Ryan collected a single, a double and drove two runs to cap an outstanding weekend.
Toledo jumped ahead with three runs in the opening inning for the second consecutive game but could not hold onto the lead. Sophomore
Riley Campbell and junior
Matt Hansen walked with one out and both stole a base to reach scoring position. Junior
AJ Montoya came through with a two-out, two-run single to open the scoring. Ryan then drove in Montoya with a base knock through the left side.
Ball State (25-22, 12-9 MAC) responded with two unearned scores in the bottom half with the help of two Toledo errors. Toledo fifth-year senior
Caleb Schillace, who made his first start of the year, was able to limit the damage by inducing a double play to get out of the inning.
UT added a run to make the score 4-2 on back-to-back two-out doubles by Adolph and Ryan in the top of the third. The Cardinals responded again by bringing home two more and tying the game at 4-4 in the next half inning.
A one-out single by junior
Brad Boss opened off the Toledo fourth. Boss advanced to third on a base hit by Campbell and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Hansen. This gave the Rockets a 5-4 lead which would be the score for the next three-and-a-half innings.
Toledo's pitching was superb during that stretch as Schillace settled in to chalk up zeros in the the fourth and fifth frames. Fifth-year senior
Kyle Slack and senior
Josh Cales each worked a scoreless inning in relief.
The Rockets were able to add an insurance run in the top of the eighth to go ahead 6-4. Adolph notched his third hit, an infield single, and Ryan walked. Freshman
Antonio Bennett hit a lazy fly ball to right field that was misplayed into a single, scoring Adolph from second with two outs.
Ball State matched the run with a run of its own in the eighth and won the game with the tying and game-winning runs in the bottom of the ninth.Â
Sophomore
Luke Schaefer (1-1) was tagged with the loss, while BSU's Evan Korson was credited with the win for 5.2 innings of one-run relief.
Toledo is currently on the outside looking in at the MAC Tournament picture. The Rockets sit one game behind Ohio, Buffalo and Western Michigan with two conference weekends to play. UT will host Youngstown State on Tuesday and Dayton on Wednesday before welcoming Central Michigan for MAC play next weekend.
