TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo baseball team closes the regular season with a three-game series at Mid-American Conference opponent Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti starting on Thursday. First pitch on Thursday and Friday will be at 6:00 p.m., while Saturday's game starts at 1:00 p.m.
The Rockets (15-37, 8-13 MAC) won three-straight conference series over Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Buffalo in the middle of the season, but were then swept in back-to-back series by Kent State and Ball State. Last weekend, the Rockets claimed a win on Saturday against Central Michigan to pull to 8-13 on the conference ledger.
Toledo is led offensively by junior Dalton Bollinger who tops the team in hits with 59 and is tied for the team lead in both RBIs (36) and home runs (6). Bollinger, junior Matt Hansen, junior AJ Montoya and sophomore Ross Adolph each have six home runs to lead the squad.
The Eagles (21-32, 12-9 MAC) has already locked in a spot in the postseason tournament at 12-9. EMU swept Ohio and won conference series against Miami and Bowling Green earlier in the year. The lone MAC series losses came to Western Michigan and Buffalo.
John Rubino leads the Eagles with a .311 average and Mitchell McGeein bolsters the middle of the lineup with a team-high 10 home runs and a squad-best 36 RBIs.
Toledo swept Eastern Michigan in last year's season series, but EMU knocked Toledo out of the MAC Tournament to end their season. The Rockets have held a strong 11-5 edge in the series over the last five years.
Coming into the weekend, the Rockets find themselves in the eighth and final qualifying spot for the tournament. Toledo is looking up at three teams with nine wins in Northern Illinois, Western Michigan and Bowling Green. The Rockets are tied with Buffalo but hold the tiebreaker over the Bulls.
Toledo clinches a berth to the MAC Tournament with a series win over EMU. The Rockets can still get into the tournament with one win but will be watching the out-of-town scoreboard for various league results. The other important series in conference will be Buffalo at Western Michigan and Northern Illinois at Miami. Bowling Green is done with MAC play and finished the conference lineup with nine wins.
If the Rockets advance they will travel to Avon, Ohio for the MAC Tournament from Wednesday, May 24 - Sunday, May 28. The winner of the conference tournament will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
