TOLEDO, Ohio - Three home runs in the final three innings was enough to push the Rockets over Central Michigan, 11-7, on Saturday afternoon at Scott Park.
Toledo (15-35, 8-12 MAC) never trailed in the contest and responded to each of Central Michigan's runs with runs of its own. The Rockets were led by junior
Brad Boss who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a pair of runs.
The Rockets jumped on the board in the first inning and didn't look back. Sophomore
Riley Campbell doubled with one out and scored easily on an RBI triple by junior
Dalton Bollinger.Â
Central Michigan (27-23, 14-6 MAC) tied the game for the first of three times with an unearned run in the top of the third.Â
UT's first response run came in the bottom half of the inning. Junior
Matt Hansen led off with a single and was moved to second by Campbell. Boss came through with an RBI base hit to right to make the score 2-1.
Central Michigan knotted the game again only to have the Rockets counter with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore
Ross Adolph reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Junior
Casey Gose knocked in Adolph, just his third RBI of the season, with a bloop single single to right center.
For the third-straight inning, the Chippewas evened the score with a single run in the fifth. The Rockets ended the binary scoring with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth to make it 5-3. Campbell started the inning with a single and scored on an RBI triple by Boss. The next batter was Bollinger who grounded out, but it was enough to plate Boss from third.
CMU cut the lead in half with its fourth-straight one-run frame in the sixth. The Rockets responded with two more scores in the next half inning, making the game 7-4. Senior
Corey Tipton reached and scored on a pinch hit, RBI double by senior
Jake Krupar. Freshman
Antonio Bennett pinch ran for Krupar and touched home plate on an RBI groundout by Campbell.
The first Rocket home run came off the bat of Adolph with two outs in the seventh. For Adolph it was his fifth HR of the campaign.Â
Central Michigan plated three runs in the top of the eighth, but again the Rockets were right there to shut down the comeback attempt. In the eighth, Bennett singled with one out and Hansen launched his sixth homer of the year to make it 10-7. Two batters later,
Brad Boss smacked his fifth home run of the season over the left field wall.Â
Senior
Sam Shutes (3-6) was credited for the win on the mound and freshman
Nate Haugh recorded his first career save. Shutes went 6.0 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
With the win, the Rockets snapped a 12-game losing streak and kept pace in the race for a spot in the MAC Tournament.
