KENT, Ohio - The Toledo offense was limited to just four singles and a pair of big innings for Kent State led to a 10-1 Mid-American Conference defeat on Sunday afternoon at Schoonover Stadium.
The Rockets (14-26, 7-8 MAC) were led by sophomore
Ross Adolph who picked up half of the UT hits with base knocks in the second and the fourth. Junior
Brad Boss and sophomore
Riley Campbell record the other two singles for the Midnight Blue & Gold.
Kent State (24-12, 10-2 MAC) struck first with a single run in the bottom of the third inning off of Toledo's senior starter
Sam Shutes. A walk and a pair of bunt singles loaded the bases to set up an RBI sacrifice fly by Dylan Rosa.
Toledo answered in the next half inning to make the score 1-1. Junior
AJ Montoya was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second. Adolph delivered the runner in scoring position with a run-scoring single.
Shutes found trouble in the fifth inning when Kent State linked a lead off single to back-to-back-to-back doubles to score three runs. Another sac fly later in the inning made it 5-1 after five frames.
The Golden Flashes batted around and put the game away with a five-run seventh inning.Â
Shutes (2-5) is saddled with the loss, while Joey Murray (5-0) stays unbeaten for Kent State.
The Rockets travel to Big Ten member Michigan State on Wednesday before taking in No. 2 Louisville on their conference bye weekend.
