Rockets Beat By Notre Dame in Non-Conference Bout

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Toledo baseball team was beat by Notre Dame, 8-3, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday night at Frank Eck Stadium.

The Rockets (10-23) battled back from a four-run deficit to cut the lead to just one, but a four-run eighth inning spelled the end to Toledo's comeback.

Junior Brad Boss singled to start the game and sophomore Riley Campbell reached on a bunt single. Junior Matt Hansen moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt but both were stranded as the Rockets were unable to take an early lead.

Notre Dame (15-17) loaded the bases on freshman starting pitcher Joey Prechtel and scored the first two run with a two-run double.

Sophomore Ross Adolph doubled to open the second and freshman Malave Bettinger walked to put two on with no outs. Again, UT was unable to take advantage of the situation, leaving two runners on base.

The Fighting Irish extended its lead to 4-0 before the Rockets started their pursuit in the fifth. Freshman Antonio Bennett walked, leading off the frame, as did Boss, the inning's second hitter. Campbell reached on an error and Hansen drove in Bennett with a sac fly to center.

The Midnight Blue & Gold cut the lead to 4-3 with a pair of tallies in the seventh. Bennett singled in the nine spot and scored his second run of the game on a one-out triple by Boss to deep right-center field. The next batter was Campbell who laid down a well-placed sac bunt to score Boss.

The Irish responded by loading the bases without putting a ball in play. A sac fly and a pair of singles brought four Notre Dame runs across the plate to make the score 8-3 and put the game away.

Prechtel (0-2) is saddled with the loss, while Bowling Green, Ohio native Ryan Smoyer is credited with the win,

The Rockets will host Buffalo on April 14-16 in a three-game Mid-American Conference series at Scott Park.
