TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Rockets were victorious, 4-3, in the first of three Mid-American Conference baseball games against Buffalo on Friday afternoon at Scott Park.
The Rockets (11-23, 5-5 MAC) used a quality start from senior
Steven Calhoun along with solo home runs from juniors
Dalton Bollinger and
AJ Montoya to take a lead into the final innings. Sophomore closer
Michael Jacob worked a rocky ninth inning to record his sixth save of the season.
Calhoun retired the Bulls in order in the first and UT took the lead, 1-0, in the bottom half of the inning. Junior
Brad Boss was hit by a pitch and went to second on a single by junior
Matt Hansen. Bollinger continued to be a run producer in the middle of the lineup with an RBI double to right center, scoring Boss.
Buffalo (10-20, 3-4 MAC) tied the scoring in the third inning on a solo home run by Brian Wasilewski. Toledo returned fire with a solo home run by Bollinger in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead, 2-1.
Calhoun settled in and allowed just one other hit through the seventh inning. Buffalo threatened in the sixth on a pair of hit batsman, but two punchouts by Calhoun ended the inning.
Freshman
Michael Ryan started the home seventh with a slow dribbler that found its way into right field. Boss singled to center to put two runners on base. After a strikeout, Hansen came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to increase the lead to 3-1.
The Bulls answered the Rocket run with a tally in the top of the eighth. Calhoun issued a lead off walk and a one-out single before being lifted in favor of Jacob. An RBI single plated a run to make it 3-2, but Montoya gunned down the runner trying the base hit into a double.
Just like the third inning, the Rockets answered a Buffalo with a solo home run, this one by Montoya on a 1-1 count to lead off the inning.
Jacob struggled to find his customary command and loaded the bases with three walks in the ninth. A fielder's choice forced in a run, cutting the lead to 4-3, but Jacob recorded the necessary outs to lock down the win.
The Rockers look to clinch the series tomorrow, April 15, as the teams play game two of the series starting at 1:05 p.m.
