TOLEDO, Ohio - Senior left-handed pitcher
Steven Calhoun threw 8.0 scoreless innings to lead Toledo to a 1-0 win over Western Michigan in the first game of its Mid-American Conference series at Mercy Field.
The Rockets (7-19, 1-3 MAC) scored the lone run of the game on a solo home run by junior
Matt Hansen to lead off the fourth inning.
Western Michigan (12-10, 2-2 MAC) and Toledo notched only four hits each as Calhoun and WMU starter Jacob Piechota stymied hitters all afternoon.
UT's first hit came on a one-out single by sophomore
Riley Campbell. Campbell was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hansen, but was stranded at second.Â
Calhoun retired 10 batters before allowing back-to-back, two-out singles in the top of the third. Calhoun retired the next batter to escape trouble. A two-out, two-base error in the top of the fourth put a runner in scoring position, but again, the lengthy southpaw set down the follow batter to end the inning.
Hansen was not bunting in the fourth as the Erie, Pa. native deposited a 1-0 fastball over the right-center field wall and off the light pole.Â
Calhoun made the one-run lead stand up, allowing just one hit and one walk in innings five and six.Â
The Rockets had a chance to add to the lead in the sixth when Hansen walked and moved to second on a sac bunt by junior
Dalton Bollinger. Junior
AJ Montoya received a free pass to first but was stranded along with Hansen as the inning ended.
A lone single in the seventh inning was all the Broncos could muster offensively in Calhoun's final two innings. Calhoun was lifted in favor of sophomore
Michael Jacob after throwing 105 pitches.
It took Jacob only nine pitches to record three outs and lock down his fifth save of the season.
Calhoun's gem runs his record to 2-1 on the year. Piechota takes the tough luck loss from WMU.
The two teams meet for the second game of the series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Both remaining games of the series will be played at Mercy Field.
