TOLEDO, Ohio - Senior catcher
Corey Tipton went 2-for-4 with four RBI's en route to a 8-5 Rockets' non-conference win over Oakland on Wednesday night at Mercy Field.
Toledo (6-19) trailed by a pair of runs, 5-3, after the top of the sixth inning, but scored a total of five runs in the next three innings to earn the win and snap a four-game slide. The Rockets pounded out 10 hits, five of which went for extra bases.
Oakland (3-19) struck first in the top of the second inning with a run off of freshman Toledo starter
Austin Calopietro. The Rockets responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own to give Calopietro the lead. UT loaded the bases on a lead off single by junior
Dalton Bollinger, a one-out double by freshman
Malave Bettinger down the left field line and a hit-by-pitch to sophomore
Ross Adolph. Tipton stepped to the plate a smoked a two-out, three-run double off the left-center field fence to score all three runners.
The 3-1 Toledo lead was cut in half as the Golden Grizzlies manufactured a run in the top of the third. Calopietro walked the lead off batter in the fourth and gave way to the bullpen with a one run lead intact. Oakland was able to push across a pair of runs in the fourth to take the lead, 4-3.Â
The tides turned in the sixth inning as fifth-year senior
Kyle Slack got into and out of trouble with minor damage. Slack walked the bases loaded, then struck out a batter looking and induced an infield fly for the second out. A bases-loaded walk built OU's largest lead at 5-3 before Slack ended the inning with a pop out to junior shortstop
Matt Hansen.
The momentum carried over to the offense as the Rockets put two on the board in the bottom half to tie the game at 5-5. Again, Bollinger singled to start the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior
Josh Cales pinch hit for Bettinger and delivered with an RBI double into the left field corner. Cales advanced on a ground out and Tipton drove him home with his second two-out RBI hit of the night.
Slack and freshman
Nate Haugh combined to shut down the Grizzlies in the seventh and get the Rockets back to the plate. Junior
Brad Boss reached on an error to start the inning, which proved to be costly. Sophomore
Riley Campbell moved Boss with a sacrifice bunt and Hansen drove him home with an RBI triple to deep left center, giving the Rockets the lead for good. With the Oakland defense drawn in, Bollinger recorded his third hit of the contest, an RBI single through the left side to make the score 7-5.
Adolph walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by freshman
Antonio Bennett to give the Rockets an insurance run going into the ninth.
The insurance run was not necessary as sophomore closer
Michael Jacob struck out the side in order for his fourth save of the campaign.
Haugh (1-2) is credited with his first career win, while Oakland's PJ Piesko (0-2) is tagged with the loss.
The Rockets are set for a three-game Mid-American Conference series with reigning MAC Tournament Champion Western Michigan from Friday, March 31 - Sunday April 2. All three games will played at Mercy Field and times are to be determined.
