
Toledo to Play Four Games in University of Illinois Tournament

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Rockets will play their last non-conference series this weekend as they travel to Champaign, Illinois for the University of Illinois Tournament from Friday, March 17 to Sunday, March 19. Toledo will play a doubleheader vs. Southern Illinois (12:00 p.m.) and Illinois (3:30 p.m.) on Friday before playing single games with SIU on Saturday and Illinois on Sunday, both at 11:00 a.m.
Toledo (2-14) won its last matchup, breaking a nine-game losing streak with a 6-4 win over Florida Atlantic on Sunday. The Rockets outhit the Owls 9-8 and plated three runs on a bases-loaded double by junior AJ Montoya.Â
Senior Sam Shutes (1-3) picked up his first win of the season, compiling a healthy stat line of 6.0 innings, four runs, three earned, on six hits, four walks and three strikeouts.Â
For the season, freshman Malave Bettinger and junior Dalton Bollinger lead the team in hitting with averages of .303 and .302, respectively. Bollinger leads the team in hits (19) and RBIs (10), while juniors Matt Hansen and Brad Boss have each scored nine runs.
The Salukis of Southern Illinois enter the weekend with a 9-7 ledger. SIU started the season with a three-game sweep of Stetson before dropping four of its next five. The Salukis bounced back with a similar sweep of Western Illinois. Losses to Murray State and Memphis brought their record to 7-6 and they have won two of three coming into this weekend.
Southern Illinois is led by Greg Lambert with a .349 average, 22 hits, eight doubles, a pair of home runs and 19 RBI.
The Illini of Illinois hits mid-March coming off of a win and a pair of losses at No. 21 and defending National Champion Coastal Carolina last weekend. Overall, the Illini sit at 4-9 with other wins coming against Milwaukee, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Florida Atlantic.Â
Florida Atlantic is the only common opponent between Toledo and Illinois. Both teams were beaten 2-1 in the series.Â
Illinois is led by Jack Yalowitz and Pat McInerney who hold .377 and .327 averages, respectively.Â
The Rockets will play a mid-week game against Notre Dame on Wednesday, March 22 before hosting Northern Illinois for three games from March 24-26 to start Mid-American Conference action.
