BOCA RATON, Fla. - Toledo and Florida Atlantic were tied going into the eighth inning when a seven-run frame broke the game open for FAU and led to a 10-3 loss for the Rockets on Friday night at the FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Rockets' (1-13) senior starting pitcher Steven Calhoun gave the Midnight Blue & Gold a quality start of 7.0 innings, three earned runs allowed on five hits and three walks. Offensively, UT was led by sophomore Riley Campbell, who was a perfect 3-for-3 from the dish, and freshman Malave Bettinger, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Calhoun hurled three perfect innings to start the game and the Rockets were able to take advantage, chasing across a pair of runs in the top of the second. Junior Dalton Bollinger singled to lead off the show, but was erased on junior AJ Montoya's fielder's choice. Bettinger singled and he and Montoya stole a base to put two runners in scoring position. Montoya scored on a run-producing ground out by freshman Michael Ryan and Bettinger touched home on an RBI single by junior Brad Boss, making the score 2-0.
Florida Atlantic (9-4-1) was able to get to Calhoun for a pair of runs in the fourth. Calhoun struck out the first batter, but issued a one-out walk to break up the string of 10-straight batters retired. A single and a walk loaded the bases for the Owls to manufacture runs on an RBI hit-by-pitch and a passed ball.Â
The Owls took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth, only to have the Rockets tie the game up again with an unearned run in the seventh. Ryan reached on an error to begin the inning and Boss bunted him to second. An infield single by Campbell and an RBI sacrifice fly by junior Matt Hansen brought the game to a 4-4 deadlock.Â
In the bottom of the eighth, FAU sent 11 hitters to the plate, collected five hits, including a two-run home run and a grand slam, and put the game out of reach with seven runs.Â
Calhoun takes his fourth no-decision in as many starts with the loss going to Miachael Jacob (0-1) in relief. The win goes to Florida Atlantic starter Alex House (2-0).
Toledo looks to split the first two games of the series on Saturday, March 11 as the teams are set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
