Adolph Homers But Toledo Downed by Binghamton, 9-3

RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Ross Adolph hit a solo home run for the third-straight game but the Rockets were defeated 9-3 by Binghamton on Saturday morning at Pitt Field.

Toledo (1-6) surrendered the first run of the game just two batters in as Binghamton's Paul Rufo hit a solo home run off of Rockets' starter Sam Shutes.

Binghamton (2-3) gave the run right back in the bottom half of the inning as junior lead off hitter Brad Boss reached on an error. Junior AJ Montoya singled him to second and junior Dalton Bollinger drove him home to tie the game 1-1.

The decisive four-run second inning for the Bearcats started with a pair of one-out singles. Luke Tevlin doubled to score a pair of runs before CJ Krowiak connected for a two-run home run to left.

UT tallied a run in the bottom of the third as Boss walked and Montoya was hit by a pitch to set the table for the middle of the order. Bollinger came through again with his team-high fourth RBI of the year to pull within three runs, 5-2.

After a shaky couple of innings, Shutes settled in on the mound. He held BU scoreless for the next four innings, including of run of seven-straight batters retired.

With two outs in the seventh, Adolph hit the first offering of the at-bat into the trees in right field to bring the Rockets within two, 5-3. Unfortunately, that was all the scoring for Toledo.

Binghamton added a run in the eighth and rallied for three more in the ninth to seal the win.

Shutes takes the loss after a gutsy 6.0 inning, eight hit and one walk performance. He allowed five runs in the first two innings, all earned. Binghamton's Nick Gallagher was credited with the win.

The Rockets close the Virginia roadtrip with a 10:00 a.m. meeting against Richmond on Sunday, Feb. 26.
