Rockets Rally Late But Come Up Short in 15-9 Loss to Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. - Five costly errors led to 10 unearned runs and a late comeback attempt fell came up short as the Rockets were defeated 15-9 by Richmond on Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field.

The Rockets (1-7) found themselves down after the first inning as Richmond batted around and put up four run, only one earned, in the bottom half of the frame.

Toledo responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Junior AJ Montoya walked, as did junior Jake Krupar and freshman Michael Ryan singled to load the bases. Senior Josh Cales hit into a fielder's choice to score the first run and Montoya scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-2.

Freshman starter Layne Schnitz-Paxton settled in after a rough first inning and threw a pair of scoreless frames in the second and third.

Richmond (3-3) added to its lead with three runs in the fifth inning off of left-handed junior reliever Alex Wagner. All three runs were unearned. The Spiders batted around again and scored eight times in the sixth inning to put the game seeming out of reach at 15-2.

However, the Rockets were not finished and rallied for three runs in the seventh. Sophomore Riley Campbell singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second as junior Casey Gose walked. Junior Matt Hansen doubled down the right field line to score Campbell. Two batters later, Junior Dalton Bollinger followed suit and doubled down the right field line, scoring Gose and Hansen.

Senior Josh Cales pitched a scoreless inning to bring the Rockets back to the plate. Ryan doubled to right center to start the inning and Campbell walked. Gose singled to right to score Ryan and Hansen followed with a single to drive in Campbell.

Senior Jacob Britt flied out to right field for the second out but Gose was able to score from third to credit Britt with an RBI sacrifice fly. Freshman Antonio Bennett hit a high fly ball to center field which was lost in the sun and landed for an RBI double, plating Gose to give the Rockets their ninth and final run.

Cales pitched a second scoreless inning in the eighth but the offense was unable to complete the comback in the final frame.

Schnitz-Paxton takes the loss and Richmond reliever Jacob Lamb is credited with the win.

The Rockets take their spring break trip to Florida for eight games in 10 days. The Midnight Blue & Gold will play three games against South Florida and Florida Atlantic with single games against Boston College and Northeastern.
