Toledo Splits Doubleheader vs. Binghamton, Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. - The Toledo baseball team fell 7-3 to Binghamton before defeating Richmond, 6-4, in a split doubleheader on Friday at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va.

The Rockets earn their first win of the season and run their record to 1-5 on the campaign. Binghamton is now 1-3 and Richmond slides to 2-3 on the year.

Game One - Binghamton

Ross Adolph hit a lead off home run in the third inning to give the Rockets a 3-1 lead but Binghamton scored six unanswered runs to come from behind and take the win.

The Rockets took the lead just two batters into the game when junior Brad Boss singled to start the day and classmate AJ Montoya laced a double down the left-field line, scoring Boss all the way from first.

Sophomore Riley Campbell walked with two outs in the second and scored when Boss hit a high fly ball that was misplayed into a three-base error.

Binghamton cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame. Senior Steven Calhoun struck out the first two batters of the inning before issuing a walk and a wild pitch. An RBI single plated the Bearcats' first run.

After Adolph's home run in the third, the Rockets were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. Binghamton took the lead with four unearned runs in the sixth and never relinquished it.

An error and back-to-back walks loaded the bases with no outs. Reliever Steven Duby struck out the next two batters in a row before allowing a two-run single. Joey Prechtel entered and also allowed a two-run single to give Binghamton the lead.

The Bearcats tacked on single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to make the final 7-3.

Calhoun took his second no-decision in as many starts after going 5.0 innings, giving up one earned run on five hits, walking four and striking out six. Duby (0-1) was pegged with the loss, while Binghamton's Joe Orlando picked up the win in relief.

The Rockets will look for revenge against Binghamton on Saturday, Feb. 25 as the two team square off at 10:00 a.m.

Game Two - Richmond

Toledo played with a lead again in game two as the Rockets scored two in the second inning.

Junior Dalton Bollinger was hit by a pitch before being caught trying to steal second. Junior Matt Hansen walked and was driven home on an RBI double off the wall by junior Jake Krupar. A three-base error by the Richmond center fielder allowed Krupar to score easily to make the score 2-0.

The third inning was good to Adolph again as the Findlay, OH native hit his second solo home run of the day down the left-field line.

UT stretched its lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the fifth. Freshman Antonio Bennett recorded his first collegiate hit, a single, to start the frame. It was Adolph again who came through, doubling to right center, to score Bennett from first. Bollinger chased home Adolph a few pitches later with an RBI single.

The five-run cushion was more than enough for Ross Achter. Achter scattered four hits in 5.0 scoreless innings of work. The senior walked four and struck out four to earn his first win of the season.

Richmond tallied a run in the sixth but was matched by a Rocket run in the seventh. Adolph singled, Bollinger was hit by a pitch and Hansen singled through the right side with Adolph in motion.

The Spiders were able to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh and another in the ninth, but sophomore Michael Jacob shut the door for his first save of the year.

The Rockets will look to sweep the two-game series against Richmond as they will meet again on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 10:00 a.m.
