Boca Raton, FL – Toledo closed out FAU's Strike Out Cancer Tournament with a convincing 14-4 victory over Savannah State on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore
Kailey Minarchick (1-2) earned her first collegiate victory, throwing 4.0 innings.
Leading the way offensively was senior 2B
Chandler Rice who went 3-for-4 with three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. Junior OF
Ashley Rausch (3-for-4) scored three runs and recorded a pair of RBI, while sophomore SS
Megan Choate went 3-for-4.
Toledo jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Sophomore 3B
Katie Cozy put Toledo on the board with an RBI single through the left side to bring home Rice. Freshman OF
Samantha Golden loaded the bases on a walk with one out on the board. Senior C
Ashley Maynard's sacrifice fly on the next play allowed senior OF
Celeste Fidge, who had reached on a fielder's choice, to cross the plate.
Choate ripped her first career triple to deep center to start off the second frame, scoring on an RBI double by Rice. Rausch then hit an identical double to score Rice, advancing to third on a SSU error. Golden singled past the first baseman to score Rausch and collect UT's fifth run.
After Savannah State jumped on the board with a three-run triple in the second, Toledo extended its lead in the fourth. Golden made the game 6-3 on her first career double to the left-center field wall to score Rausch.
SSU cut the Rockets' lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth with a single down the third-base line, but it would be the Lady Tigers' final run of the contest.
Toledo extended the lead to 7-4 in the fifth inning when Choate doubled home Rice, who has reached on a bunt single.
Sophomore
Heather Webb relieved Minarchick in the circle in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Toledo busted the game open in the sixth with a seven-run inning. Maynard ripped a three-run bomb over the left field wall, and Rice then recorded her third RBI double of the contest, knocking in Choate. Rice plated UT's 12
th run on an RBI single by Rausch. Junior OF
Marriah Wise recorded her first triple as a Rocket to push Gross and Rausch across the plate for the final two runs of the game.
Toledo next heads to South Carolina for four games over the weekend.
