West Lafayette, IN – Toledo (0-1) dropped its season-opener to Big Ten member Purdue, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, IN.Â
"I thought that we competed extremely well today against a very tough Purdue team," said head coach Tracy Mauntler. "If we can build on today's performance then we will be right where we need to be during the conference season."
Â
Purdue jumped out front by claiming the doubles point. Junior Sidnay Huck and freshman Deedee Leenabanchong paired up to notch a 6-4 victory over the Boilermakers at first doubles.
Â
Huck went on to claim a decisive 6-4, 6-1 victory over Nicole Robinson at No. 1 singles, recording Toledo's only point of the match.
"Sidnay played extremely well today and her game was very mature," added Mauntler. "She owned the court from the moment she stepped on it. Defeating a Big Ten player at No. 1 singles is a great accomplisment."
Â
Freshman Deedee Leenabanchong dropped her opening set, 2-6, at No. 3 singles but fought back to record a 7-6 victory over Alex Sabe in Set 2. Leenabanchong was not able to hang on as Sabe claimed the tiebreaker, 10-5.
