TOLEDO, OH -
Isa Echeverri's second goal of the season was not enough as Toledo fell in its Mid-American Conference opener against Kent State, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Scott Park. The loss snaps the Rockets winning streak at four matches.
Toledo (5-4-0, 0-1 MAC) earned a 33rd minute corner kick which was put into play by
Brooke Maletic from the left side. Maletic found Echeverri on the far post and she was able to guide the ball into the back of the net. Echeverri led the team throughout the match with three shots, two of which were on goal.
Less than two minutes later, Kent State (5-1-0, 1-0 MAC) knotted the score at 1-1 on a Jenna Hellstrom free kick, her sixth goal of the season. The two teams went into the break deadlocked at one apiece.Â
Hellstrom, the reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Year, broke the tie on another free kick in the 82nd minute. This goal proved to be the game-winner as the Rockets could not mount a scoring attack in the final eight minutes.
UT was outshot by the Golden Flashes 9-5 in the first half and 6-3 in the second period.
Katie Wilson made nine saves in goal for the Rockets compared to two saves for Kent State keepers.
Toledo remains at Scott Park for its next match against Ohio on Sept. 25 at 1:05 p.m.
