TOLEDO, OH - A 70th minute goal by junior
Isa Echeverri was enough to lift Toledo to its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season, 2-1, over Ohio on Sunday afternoon at Scott Park. Echeverri has scored a goal in three straight matches for the Rockets.
The Rockets (6-4-0, 1-1-0 MAC) took the lead in the 19th minute on senior
Kiersten Johnson's team-leading fifth goal of the season. Johnson was able to get around an Ohio defender on the right wing and beat the keeper to the near post.
Ohio (2-6-1, 0-2-0 MAC) responded in the 23rd minute with an equalizer. Megan Niebuhr played a long pass forward which was headed in by Alivia Milesky, minutes after checking into the match.
"Ohio is a tough challenge," said Toledo head coach
TJ Buchholz. "We scored in the first half and they came right back and made it a game. Really proud of our team's effort and we can build on this win going forward."
Echeverri's game-winner came on a long set play from junior
Chiara Paradiso near midfield. The Colombian native was able to head the ball just inside the right post from a few yards away.
"Isa has upped her game and shes great in the middle of the field," continued Buchholz. "She brings a great energy and we thrive off of it. She found a way to score that game-winning goal and that's what great leaders do."
The UT defense collared the Bobcat attack for the final 20 minutes to seal the Rocket win.Â
Toledo was very aggressive offensively, outshooting Ohio 17-8. Sophomore
Katie Wilson made three saves in goal for the victors while Erin Beurket made six saves for the Bobcats.
The women's soccer team is on the road for its next two contest; at Akron on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m. and at Buffalo on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 12:00 p.m.Â
