TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo offense exploded for three goals and the defense posted its fourth-straight shutout in a 3-0 victory over Indiana State on Sunday afternoon at Scott Park. The Rockets extend their winning streak to four matches for the first time since 2011.
The Rockets (5-3-0) got on the board first as senior
Kiersten Johnson scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 11th minute.
Brooke Maletic played a long pass to Johnson who was able to beat the keeper to the far post.
Johnson nearly scored her second goal in the 63rd minute but was denied by the cross bar. Freshman
Alex Troy headed in the rebound for the first goal in her collegiate career.Â
Junior
Isa Echeverri capped the scoring with a 66th minute header off a left-side corner kick from senior
Lauren Taylor. For Echeverri, who led the team in scoring last season, it was her first goal of the season.
"We've worked really hard on our attack," said Toledo head coach
TJ Buchholz. "It's finally coming together. Kiersten started us off and we needed that. It gave us some breathing room and some confidence."
Katie Wilson had little trouble getting the win between the posts as the sophomore keeper faced only five shots. Meanwhile, Toledo fired an aggressive 20 shots on offense.
"Our defense is playing outstanding," continued Buchholz. "They're a cohesive unit and we finally feel like we have good continuity in the back and we have key pieces that are working well together."
Toledo starts its Mid-American Conference schedule on Friday, Sept. 23 as the Rockets host Kent State at 4:00 p.m.
