Rockets Host Northern Kentucky and Detroit in Home Opening Weekend

TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo women's soccer team (1-2-0) will look to get back to its winning ways this weekend when the Rockets open home play against Northern Kentucky (1-3-0) on Friday, Sept. 2 at 4:00 p.m. and Detroit (1-2-0) on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 1:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at Scott Park and can  be seen streaming live on ESPN3.

UT holds an impressive 72-29-9 (.713) record at the corner of Parkside Blvd. and Hill Ave. since the start of the 2005 campaign, including a 6-2-0 ledger last fall.

The Rockets are coming off a 4-0 setback of ACC member Louisville on Sunday. Twenty-one seconds into the match the Cardinals found the back of the net and went on and scored three more goals before the final whistle. The Rockets allowed 11 shots on goal and only managed two shots offensively. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Wilson made a career-high six saves between the posts.

Overall in 2016, redshirt freshman Kelsey Kraft and senior Kiersten Johnson lead the team with two goals apiece.

Northern Kentucky enters this weekend's non-conference action with a 1-3-0 record. The Norse notched their first win over Morehead State last Monday, 1-0, on a Katelyn Newton goal in the 20th minute.  NKU has also suffered losses against Appalachian State, Cincinnati, and Eastern Kentucky so far this year.

"Northern Kentucky has had an up and down year so far," said Toledo head coach TJ Buchholz. "They won 11 games last year. We knocked them off last season, but it was a battle. They have some really special players that we will have to deal with and be ready for."

Newton and Macy Hambin have both scored one goal for the Norse and Emily Lohmann has played all 360 minutes in goal.

Detroit (1-2-0) most recently dropped a 3-1 decision at Texas on Sunday. Anna Minding scored the lone goal on a breakaway against the Longhorns. The Titans will play MAC member Bowling Green on Friday before returning for Sunday's match.

"They are a hardworking, very athletic and well-coached team," said Buchholz. "Their work ethic is spectacular and they really get after it. We have two quality opponents this weekend and we need to be on our "A" game to get the results we want."

Minding is the leading goal scorer for the Titans with two tallies. Titan's goalkeeper Marina Manzo has played all three games and racked up 270 minutes in net.

Following this weekend's contents, the Rockets will host Cleveland State on Friday, Sept. 9 at 4:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
