Toledo, OH – Senior LHP
Ross Achter tossed a career-high 8.1 frames as Toledo shut out Northern Illinois (19-27, 12-8), 5-0, at Ralph McKinzie Field. The Rockets are currently on a season-high three-game winning streak and improved to 12-34-1 overall and 7-10 in the Mid-American Conference.
Â
"Ross was just great today," head coach
Cory Mee said. "He was aggressive, attacked the hitters, had good command and really just kept going at them."
Â
Along with the career-high in innings, Achter did not give up a run and earned a team-high fifth victory of the season. Achter scattered seven hits, fanned three batters and walked just one. Toledo has only walked two batters over the first two games of the series against NIU. Freshman RHP
Luke Schaefer finished the game for the Rockets and did not give up a hit in 0.2 frames.
Â
The offense helped Achter out with five batters picking up multi-hit games.
Â
"The offense was relentless, kept putting guys on base and kept putting pressure on NIU," Mee said. "Once we took the lead we tacked on some runs. It was a great team effort."
Â
Sophomore DH
Brad Boss led the way with a 3-for-5 day and two RBI. Boss has picked up at least one RBI during every game of the winning streak. Sophomore CF
AJ Montoya went 2-for-4 and drove in the other UT RBI. Senior SS
Deion Tansel reached three times with a double, single and walk.
Â
Montoya grabbed the lead for Toledo in the fourth with a single up the middle to score sophomore 1B
Dalton Bollinger.
Â
Toledo jumped back on the board in the sixth for a three-run frame. A throwing error by the NIU third baseman brought home freshman LF
Ross Adolph and Montoya, and Boss gave UT a 4-0 advantage with a single to right field to score Sokol.
Â
Boss tacked on a run in the eighth with a double to center field to score Sokol to give Toledo a 5-0 lead.
Â
Toledo will go for the sweep of NIU on Sunday, May 8 at 2:05 p.m. at Ralph McKinzie Field.
