Toledo Drops Extra-Inning Affair With Ball State, 8-7

Sophomore 2B Matt Hansen ripped a solo home run in the tenth inning and picked up two RBI during the game. Senior SS Deion Tansel also played two runners with two singles. Senior DH Brad Boss, sophomore 1B Dalton Bollinger and senior C Lucas Sokol also drove in one RBI on the day.

Freshman LHP Michael Jacob was tagged with the loss after allowing the game-winning run to score across in the tenth. Jacob fanned one batter and allowed two earned runs to score in 1.2 innings. Junior RHP Sam Shutes earned the start for the Rockets and allowed five earned runs while fanning three batters in 4.0 frames. Freshman RHP Luke Schaefer was magnificent in relief and did not allow a runner to reach base in his 3.0 frames. Sophomore RHP Nolan Silberhorn walked one batter and did not give up a hit in 1.1 innings.

Toledo scored in the first inning once again with a Bollinger single to score senior RF Cory Finkler.

UT added three in the second. Hansen started the scoring with a single to right field to score sophomore CF AJ Montoya. Boss singled to right field to score Sokol, and Tansel made the game 4-0 with a single to left field to score Hansen.

Ball State answered with two runs in the third using a groundout and Ryan Spaulding triple to cut the UT advantage to 4-2. Scott Tyler and Matt Eppers both hit home runs to give BSU a 5-4 lead in the fourth.

Toledo tied the game in the fifth when Tansel picked up his second RBI of the day with a single through the left side of the infield.

The Cardinals gained the lead again in the fifth with a sacrifice bunt from Sean Kennedy that scored Spaulding.

The Rockets tied the game again at 6-6 in the bottom half of the frame with a  sacrifice fly from Sokol to score Montoya.

The contest went to extra innings, and Ball State took the lead in the tenth. A Kennedy double and Griffin Hulecki single scored the game-winning runs.

Hansen cut the BSU lead to 8-7 in the bottom half of the inning but UT was unable to tie the game.

Toledo will finish the regular season with a huge three-game series vs. Eastern Michigan beginning on Thursday, May 19 at 3:05 p.m.
