Nine-Run Fourth Inning Drops Rockets Against Dayton, 9-5
4/8/2026 7:06:00 PM | Baseball
Braden Curry tosses 4.0 innings with career-high nine strikeouts in relief
Â
The Rockets (15-17) led 1-0 through three innings, but the Flyers (18-13) hit three home runs in a nine-run, six-hit top of the fourth to take a 9-1 edge. Toledo rallied in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four times to cut the deficit in half, 9-5, but could get no closer.
Â
Redshirt junior Troy Sudbrook tallied three doubles in a 3-for-4 afternoon, adding a walk. Junior Charlie Scholvin and freshman Liam Arsich each contributed two-hit outings. Freshman Preston Zumwalt totaled a pair of RBIs.
Â
Cole Giesige (0-3) took the loss. Sophomore Braden Curry pitched 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out a career-high nine batters, He recorded nine of his 12 outs via the strikeout. Michael Fliss and Deron Swanson each recorded a scoreless inning.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"Baseball is a cruel game sometimes. We outplayed them for 8.5 innings. Unfortunately, the top of the fourth was enough to sink us today. Giving up nine runs in one inning is hard to overcome. We had some chances to claw our way back into it, we just couldn't get that big hit. I thought we hit the ball fine, a lot of hard-hit balls right at them. Braden Curry was awesome today and gave us a chance to mount a comeback. As I told the team, we turn attention and sole focus to this weekend at Western Michigan. We need to play well and keep our ground at the top of the standings."
